I was looking for information about a deceased Great Uncle of mine who lived in Benton Harbor Michigan. His name was William Gestner. He was born in Germany in 1880, migrated to New York City and at some point moved to Benton Harbor Michigan. I knew he lived there on November 30, 1955.

I believe he was a tailor. If you have any information I would appreciate it.

MY GENEOLOGY ADVENETURE: It all started with my sister and a notebook full of copied papers and has turned into a large almost cabinet drawer full of names places and dates which connected lost members of a family for four generations.

My dad for instance, who past away in 2007,  got to see his brother and talk with his sister on the phone who were separated by adoption for over sixty plus years  we have talked with cousins from many of these siblings , are enjoying time with the last and only living brother of his siblings and have received emails of info on our family tree from family members from for generations back which has been traced to Berrien County 1850 census , Buchanan township,   which brings me to rely heavily and trust largely on your society for further help, you know  HELP !

Well, here in Missouri we traced Stoners to Michigan 1850 census DAVID K. STONER  and have reason to believe his father as being JOHNATHON STONER  and the name in the census is spelled STONNER.  I don’t know why but I may be on the part of a spelling error DAVID WAS BORN IN PENNSYLVANIA ABOUT 1805, WELL THE CENSUS WILL TELL ALL THAT AND MORE; my great grandpa is not mentioned on the census.  He was born after the report of the census was taken . His name is HENRY STONER AND WAS BORN THERE IN MICHIGAN IN ABOUT 1850 . His sisters who are both buried in the cemetery here in Pulaski  Co. ELIZABETH (STONNER) METCALF ,WEAVER  , Horacio Metcalf , Noah  Weaver . and RACHEL ( STONNER) STUMP , Soloman Stump, I notice that you have a member with that last name also; well there are some nuggets to start with , it is said that my  great, great grand father DAVID K. STONER DIED GALENA AND WAS BURIED IN PLYMOUYH IN. HENRY my great grand father also is buried here in Pulaski Co . along with his sisters and I would want to mention the reason for their trip to Missouri was a missionary trip to start a church of the DUNKER FAITH  ,funny the name of the cemetery is called DUNKARD, We were always told it was donated by a family of that name , sad to say it was a misspelling on the part of someone

Feel free to email   with any questions anyone may have concerning the stoner  family  or any concerning the other members genealogy  also   hope to help in any way possible  and in closing

THANK YOU AGAIN.  JIMMY DEAN STONER

I am  researching the Hasse family in Berrien County.  I am the great grandson of Albertina Hasse and Herman Klug who immigrated to Benton Habor via Baltimore from Volhynia in 1894.  The passenger list included Johann and Caroline Hasse (presumably Albertina's father and mother) and Albert and Ernstine Hasse (presumably her brother and his wife).  They also may be related to August Hasse. I would appreciate any information or leads.

Thanks.

I am researching the Klug family. My great grandfather, Herman Klug and his wife, Albertina Hasses, immigrated to Benton Harbor from Volhynia in 1894. He may be related to August Klug who also immigrated to Berrien County around the same time period. I am descended from Herman Klug through his son, Carl August Klug, and his grandson, Charles E. Klug, Sr.

Thanks.

I need some help in my research concerning Calista, above.  She was born in Ohio 1832, but was married at the home of her mother, Nancy Agnes Allison Hobson Carey Strong.  Her first marriage was to Joseph Albert Cooper, which ended in divorce.  She then married Thomas Osborn, who died young.  She then married Darwin Rathbun, and after that, Amasa Emerson.  Then I can't trace her further, until I find her buried in the Glendora Cemetery, as follows:

OSBORN, Infant....................................................d. 3 Mar 1884
OSBORN, Calista J., 61y, 10m, 28y, Wife of Thomas J....d. 29 Dec 1893
OSBORN, Gay H., 3m, Dau. TJ & CJ..................d. 28 Sep 1872
OSBORN, Rollo H., Son of GH & RA.................d. 8 Apr 1884
OSBORN, Thomas J., Husb. of Calista J., 33y, 5m, 23d.....d. 4 Jul 1867
OSBORN, Tommy, 11y, 6m, 16d, Son of TJ & CJ..d. 26 Aug 1879

The listing is somewhat puzzling as Gay H., daughter, who died at 3 m., dau of Thomas and Calista, died in 1872 whereas Thomas, husband died in 1867.  I would like to have a re reading of those stones to determine this mystery.  I would also like to find out what happened to Calista after 1870.  I cannot find her on the 1880 census, but I have found her son George in South Dakota for several years.

Thanks, Mary June

Hello, I am researching the surname Badgley with respect to the Edwin/Edward Badgley family of Berrien County, Michigan. So far, I have found only that which is available online. I am especially interested in an Edwin or Edward Badgley (born sometime 1862 to 1870) and his family. I know who his wife and children are and that he was either a fruit broker or a “travel agent.” Polk’s lists him as Edwin, but Census records list him as Edward, and I have reason to believe this to be more accurate. I would like to know his various residences in the area, place of business, church affiliation (if any) and any details regarding his family members, especially his daughter Muriel. As a neophyte to such searching, I would greatly appreciate any information or sources you may have available. Thank you.

Richard Lysaght (1818) married to Katherine Yore (1822) supposedly had a daughter Joannes (23 Feb 1847).   Also, a daughter, Elizabeth (27 June 1853) and Agnes (06 Mar 1857).  Does anyone have info on these three daughters?

Hello,
I have many roots in Berrien County and have already been there on several research trips. But new info has come to light, and I would like to hire someone to check it out for me:
I recently learned that my ancestor Eli Martin, appears in the 1860 census at age 14 in the household of Lucinda (age 53) and David Swartz (age 54). They were living in Oronoko Township, Berrien County, at the time of the 1860 census.
Lucinda was previously married to Anthony Martin, according to Eli’s marriage record. I knew Anthony (Anton) had died shortly after arriving in America in 1854, but this was the first indication I had of her second marriage.
I would like to find all available records of Lucinda.
To add to the confusion, the 1854 passenger list of the ship Victoria shows Anthony (Anton) Martin’s wife name as Crescensia, and while the other brothers listed with them match those I know of (Joseph, Anthony, John — all settled in Berrien County), the son Eli appears by another, illegible name in the passenger list but is the right age.
I need someone on site to help me clear up all this confusion.

Hello,

I am trying to find a copy of an obituary from the Niles Republican, Berrien Co. Michigan sometime in July 1843 for Susan C. Smith who died July 1, 1843. I cannot find who her parents were and am hoping the obit will give some clues. Her maiden name was Crippen and her husband was Maj, Timothy Seymour Smith.

I am trying to find out information on my family members and could use your help. Silas Russell moved to Three Oaks, MI between 1863-1866 and was a farmer. His wife was Lucy Jane Chase Russell and his children were Howard Issac, Warren, Myra, Harvey, Mary and Herman King. They moved there from Stuben, Indiana. Silas Russell died there in Nov. 1870 of consumption (TB). Herman King was born there in Dec. 1866. By 1880 Lucy and children Harvey, Herman and Mary were living in KS; Myra was married and living in CO. Howard and Warren may have stayed in the area?  I would like to find out where the Russell farm was located and where Silas (and any other Russels) were buried. Can you help me or advise me on where to find the information I seek?  I may be in the area in May and would like to visit family sites if I can track them down by then.

I am a graduate student in History at the University of California, Santa Barbara.  I am doing some research concerning a young man from Georgetown, DC who came to Berrien County in 1838, got the "fever and ague" and returned to Georgetown a year or two after coming out to Berrien.

I am looking for someone whom I would be willing to pay to look around for any evidence of what this young man was doing in Berrien.  I don't need genealogical info per se.  I want to be more certain about when he was there and what he was doing.   Can you help me out with this?

The man's name was James King.  There is an outside chance that he went by the name of James King of William.  He was born in January of 1822 in Georgetown, DC.  He came to Berrien County, most likely St. Joseph, in 1838.  It is said that he worked as a mercantile clerk while in Berrien County, but it is possible he was associated with a bank or newspaper or anything else for that fact.  He was a young man trying to make his fortune.  He was back in Georgetown by 1840.

I am presently working on writing a book concerning Great Lakes shipwrecks.  One of the stories I'm currently working on is the barque Sunshine, which capsized on Lake Erie on July 2, 1859.  The captain of the ship was a citizen from St. Joseph, Capt. Cornelius McNeil.  Onboard the vessel with him was his wife, Priscilla, and their three children.  Captain McNeil and the three children all were drowned.  Priscilla McNeil was the only survivor of the family.  Five crew members also survived.

I would like to find out more information on Capt. McNeil, if available.  I am also curious about what may have happened to Priscilla after the tragic deaths of her husband and children.  Whenever possible, I am putting more of a "human spin" on the tragedies that occurred on the Great Lakes, rather than just shipwreck statistics.  That is why I'm looking for any information I can find on people who were involved in the shipwrecks on the Great Lakes if possible. I already have found a newspaper article from the St. Joseph Traveler dated July 13, 1859 online concerning Capt. Cornelius and the tragedy.  If perhaps you could find any more information (newspaper articles, marriage records, birth records, the age of Capt. Cornelius and his children when they died, etc.), it would be very helpful and greatly appreciated.  Also, any pictures of the captain and his wife would also be welcome.  Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.
